That includes a 16 trillion link index and over 7 billion tracked keywords. Ahrefs is especially strong at exposing gaps in your backlink profile and surfacing underused content opportunities.
Semrush casts a wider net.
On top of SEO essentials, you get tools for PPC, social media scheduling, PLA data, and even brand monitoring. It packs more than 50 modules into the dashboard. That can feel overwhelming at first, but it’s a major win if you manage multiple clients or campaigns across channels.
Its Keyword Magic Tool pulls from a 22 billion keyword dataset and lets you filter by intent, CPC, SERP features, and ad history. It also links keyword and backlink insights with paid search data, which Ahrefs does not do.
When our team compared them side by side, Semrush stood out for the sheer volume of insight per report. But we also noticed that newer users got stuck more often—where Ahrefs guided you straight to the next action.
One watch-out: Semrush tries to be a Swiss Army knife. If you only need SEO, a lot of its features may sit idle.

Still, only the Starter and Lite plans enforce rigid credits—higher tiers offer more flexibility, but you’ll pay for the headroom.
And keep in mind: Ahrefs does not offer a full-featured free trial. Its Webmaster Tools are useful for basic audits, but not for evaluating the full platform.

That said, some features—like the credit system—are not always obvious until you hit a limit.
Semrush, on the other hand, takes more effort to learn but gives you more control once you’re in.
The interface is heavier and more layered. Some users call it bloated while others say it’s a beast you need to tame.
We noticed the same: it took longer to set up custom projects, but the depth of data per module made it worth the time for multi-channel marketers.
On support, Ahrefs offers live chat during business hours and typically replies within minutes. Email responses average under 8 hours. Semrush provides ticket and phone support for higher tiers, but users report slower responses overall.

When our interns tested both, they moved faster in Ahrefs. But our agency team leaned toward Semrush once campaigns got more complex.
